Daily Prompt: Have you ever eavesdropped on a conversation you weren’t supposed to? Tell us about a time when it was impossible not to overhear a conversation between people who didn’t know you were there. What was the conversation about? How did it make you feel?
When I was younger, my friend and I were obsessed with a kid’s programme called ‘Totally Spies’, all about three spy girls – Alex, Sam and Clover – and their adventures. We used to pretend to be them whenever we played together – I was always Sam and she was Clover.
One day, I went round to her house for dinner and we ended up playing this game, but to make it more realistic we decided to actually spy on her mum. For Christmas I had been given a set of spy goggles, (which had night vision lights on either side!) and a spy pod which you could basically leave in a room and you could listen to what was being said through a kind of walky talky device – we thought we were pretty cool!
So, spy gear at the ready, we creeped downstairs and stood outside the door where my friends mum was on the phone. We even had a notebook so we could scribble down what we could hear!
Anyway, it was all going well when suddenly the topic of phone conversation turned to a pair of earrings. Because it was my friend’s birthday soon, it was likely that the earrings were a present for her. My friend waited until her mum had finished on the phone, then for some reason went ahead to tell her that we had been spying on her conversation all this time and that she had heard about some earrings. Her mum began to get a bit angry at this point. How did I feel about this? To be honest, I was quite terrified – her mum is one scary lady!
