Daily Prompt: Being Mysterious!

Daily Prompt: Today you can write about anything, in whatever genre or form, but your post must mention a dark night, your fridge, and tears (of joy or sadness; your call). Feel free to switch one ingredient if you have to (or revisit one from previous trio prompts).

Some things just had to be done, and, being the assassin in this situation, I had to do them. That didn’t mean I enjoyed it.

Droplets of rain ran down the back of my neck as I stood in that street, keeping well out of the light of streetlamps and passing cars. I waited for over an hour in the dank weather before making my move. I had done this a hundred times. So why did today feel so different? I shrugged the feeling off and hopped over the gate with practised ease. The key had been cut two days ago and it slotted into the lock just as it should do, making a gentle click as I turned it and pushed open the faux wooden door, slipping quietly inside. The rain was good, I decided. It masked any sound I made. I stood in the kitchen and observed my current battleground. A breakfast bar with four stools took up the centre of the room, surrounded by fake granite worktops and cream cupboards. There was a fruit bowl on one counter. It was just a normal family kitchen. I sighed and walked over to the silver fridge in the corner. Nothing like a small snack on the job. Light spilled across the wooden floor as I pulled open the door and casually scanned the shelves like I have done so many times before. My eyes fell upon something which made the breath catch in my throat. It was completely ridiculous, I know, but the sight of a jar of raspberry jam had childhood images flashing across my mind like it had sparked a small storm up there. Memories of picnics and school lunches and baking cakes and sick days and windy beaches – times when life was simpler and I was innocent. I found myself weeping on the cold floor of that kitchen like I was still a kid, hair dripping from the rain.

I think it’s time for a career change.

(Perhaps this could be a slightly morbid advert for a brand of jam?)
